We kick off the episode speaking about Spud’s venture into home brewing cider. Sure you’d be mad not to give it a go when your backyard is producing apples faster than a Frank McCourt family can produce children.

Our first main topic of conversation is a look at an article from Vulture.com about the jokes that comedians regret making, you can read it here. I suppose the highlights of the article is that Patton Oswald speaks about the words he regrets using early in his career. Paul Scheer also tells an interesting story about a 9/11 type of joke, maybe when telling it he was hinting at Steve Rannazzisi’s (who he starred with in The League) story of him not actually being in one of the Two Trader Centers in New York on September 11th. Yes, you read that correctly, you can read about it here.

We speak about comedians in general owning their bad material, how they must come to terms with the bad jokes and the non-politically correct material that most comedians use at the beginning of their careers. Many say they use it to shock or get attention at the start but then they learn more of the craft and how to make people laugh without shocking them. We all know that jokes come from misdirection but the challenge is really in making people like unexpectedly, not shocking them. There’s a slight difference and the best comedians are the ones that do it best.

We get a bit existential on it then; instead of hating or regretting who you were 10 or five years ago onstage, maybe it’s best to own your old material and take solace in the fact that you’ve learned a good deal about your craft along the way. Saying things like ‘no regrets’ it sits uneasily with me, by regretting our actions we learn from our mistakes. Surely?

Sex Podcast

Next up we have a chat about sex. We all love sex, we all have sex, well, most of us do anyway. Recently though I came across an embarrassing sex story here so we have a chat about some of the embarrassing sexual encounters we’ve had.

We talk a little too then about why Irish people are so terrible about speaking about sex and as well we speak about why comedians speak about it so much, it’s no secret, it’s the great leveler that we can all relate to.
